Following the footsteps of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Anna Gasteyer, and other famous female casts who left SNL, Kristen Wiig has officially left the show after 7 years of being on it.
During the finale of season 37, the host Mick Jagger together with all of the casts in the final sketch of the night (and of the season), did a heartfelt and fun graduation sketch wherein Wiig was the honorable graduate and all of casts gleefully danced with her. The "graduation" was concluded by Lorne Michaels - creator of SNL - as he danced with Wiig.
As one of the most intellectual casts and an ultimate fan favorite, Kristen Wiig will definitely be missed in SNL. Her portrayal of Gilly and Target Lady are just some of Wiig's most famous sketches. In an interview, Lorne Michaels had mentioned that Kristen is definitely one of the best casts the show ever had in 37 years.
Kristen is just one of the rumored casts to leave SNL after this season. Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis were also rumored to exit the live sketch show, however, since they only bid farewell to Kristen in the finale, Samberg and Sudeikis are expected to return next fall. But there is still no assurance for this.
As what Kristen said during her interview with Alec Baldwin in his podcast, everybody has to leave. It's all a matter of when (and how). SNL produced some of the industry's best comedians such as Will Ferrel, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Rob Schneider, Robert Downey Jr., Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and a lot more. They all started in one show, and I'm sure Wiig has a very bright future ahead of her outside out of the walls of Studio 8h.
On the bright side, Wiig's departure will give the other remaining female casts - Nasim Pedrad, Abby Elliot, Vanessa Bayer, Kate McKinnon - more screentime in the future sketches.
