Let's be honest, this season of the Emmy-award winning sitcom from ABC - Modern Family - had been pretty shaky and mediocre. We had a few laughs all throughout, but it didn't make us fall off the chair from laughing just like in the show's previous two season.
But the season finale of Modern Family was, without any shred of doubt, is one of their best yet.
I was actually worried that ModFam won't win on this year's Emmys, but after watching the season finale, all of my woes vanished. The entire episode was beautifully written and perfectly executed. A good sitcom is when it makes us laugh like a maniac, yet it also makes our hearts flutter. Modern Family surely hit those.
On the episode, Cam and Mitchell got a call from the adoption agency that a baby is already on their way as a mother picked them to be the kid's new daddies. Since the momma is Spanish, they ask for Gloria's help to be their translator. In the hospital, the two lovable gay dads did not receive their happy ending as the grandma of the baby decided to raise her grandson - after a funny telenovela-ish scene.
Meanwhile in the Dunphys, the parents send Alex to her prom and then finding out that their genius daughter's date is.... gay. Well, we've seen that before in many sitcoms so it didn't tickle any of my funny bones. Anyway, Haley and Dylan have an announcement: they will live in together. Haley applied to a community college and for a job in the mall since no college has sent her an acceptance letter, and Dylan has a shirt business. The kids think that it's enough to live together. After a lot of arguments between the parents and the lovers, Luke revealed that he hid Haley's acceptance letter. Therefore, Haley will go to college and will not live with Dylan anymore!
Since Cam and Mitchell has to go to the whole mother thing, the dads can't go to Lily's ballet recital so they asked Jay and Manny to accompany their adopted daughter. In Ed O'Neil's best performance to date (and the show's one of the most touching scenes), Jay talked to Lilly about the whole adoption and that she must be happy because she's going to have a new brother. Also, Jay danced with Lily!
And the major bonanza of the episode (and of the season) is....... Gloria's pregnant! Yes, our hot hispanic momma is carrying a Pritchette in her belly!
If there's one thing Modern Family is good at, it is always upbringing what the show has always been all about: family. There are a lot of shows out there who focus on their theme on the first season, and then loses touch to it as it goes on for years. That's not the case for ABC's strongest sitcom. The episode was funny and heartfelt. It gives you a sigh of relief and just makes you realize how much you're having fun spending your Wednesday nights with them.
A mediocre season was summed up with an excellent episode. I can now smell the Emmys....
And what would Sofia Vergara look like with a huge belly?
