ABC's freshman sitcom SUBURGATORY follows George Altman, a single father who decides to get away from New York City to the suburbs so he can give his teenage daughter, Tessa, a better life after he finds an unopened box of condoms in her drawer. However, their move to the suburbs has the daughter wondering if they just entered the world of The Stepford Wives after they see how "perfect" their new locale is, right down to the neighbors who welcome them into the cul-de-sac.
Being part of ABC's Wednesday comedy block has an added pressure. You will be lined up with Emmy-wining Modern Family and a very strong sitcom contender The Middle. However, Suburgatory was able to reach the par of the said shows.
Jeremy Sisto and Jane Levy, as George and Tessa respectively, are both relatable, funny, charming and has a realistic father-daughter relationship. The show may have started a bit rocky and not on edge, but it definitely proves it credibility halfway. In addition to the two said main casts, SNL alums Anna Gasteyer and Chris Parnell add some spice to the sitcom. It may not tickle our funny bones all the time, but it's good enough for me to tune in every Wednesday.
My favorite characters are Shiela Shay and Noah Werner. They are funny, admirable, and outrageous. I seriously get more excited every time they appear on my screen.
Over all, Suburgatory is something to look forward to by everybody. ABC really knows how to develop a funny and heart warming family comedy. Now that it has been renewed for a second season, and one of the network's strongest comedy shows, the writers and the creative team of Suburgatory has more time to improve their show rather than being a mediocre and unrealistic comedy full of nonsensical characters.
The Verdict:
An okay show with an amazing ensemble of casts, I give Suburgatory season 1 a rating of:
3.5/5
