New Girl: The VERDICT

Before I begin with the body of this post, THE VERDICT is something I made up and in here, I will post my thoughts/comments/review/suggestion regarding a freshman show (which aired during the 2011-2012 season).

Recently, FOX's freshman sitcom NEW GIRL, featuring Zooey Deschanel, had aired its season finale episode. The show centres around  Jess, a bubbly, adorable, eccentric, and young elementary school teacher, who moved in the apartment of three single men as she tries to regain herself fro a failed relationship with a guy who cheated on her. Her new house mates are Nick, Schmidt, and Winston. The gang, together with Jess's model bestfriend CeCe, resembles a group of young people as they share friendship, love, and laughter with each other despite the challenges of life.

New Girl is definitely one of the most well known freshman shows, which made buzz even before its premiere last September 20, 2011, because of the series' lead star Zooey Deschanel. The first few episodes received a lot of favourable to positive reviews from critics and regular viewers alike. However, in my opinion, the show lost its "spark" halfway as they desperately try to balance the shallow and complicated story lines of each characters, thus, making the show "corny" and unrealistic. Although the sitcom focuses on Jess, the writers find it difficult to juggle all of the characters. There are episodes which doesn't make sense at all and are unfunny which makes some of the characters like Winston and Schmidt annoying and useless.

Nevertheless, Deschanel definitely lifted the show from being cancelled due to her down to earth personality and undeniable beauty... and of course, her "quirkiness". Furthermore, the fun and cute opening theme sung by Zooey herself is excellent.

The show never failed to impress all of us in terms of the "Guest Stars department". New Girl had/has Justin Long, Lizzy Caplan, Rachael Harris, Dermot Mulroney, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and more.

Despite the so-so first season, the season finale episode was perfect. It was able to depict clearly the friendship and love of our main characters with each other without being over-the-top. Also, the character development and growth of all of them (except Winston) was beautifully written and shown.

Conclusion:

It's just the first season. The show has been renewed by FOX for a second one which means the writers and the actors have a lot of time to regain their momentum in the next year/s to come.

Over all, I will give NEW GIRL Season 1 a rating of....

2.5/5
